Giving your gates a lead with a gate tether

Gate tether installed on green metal gate with hook and eye hinges

Gate tethers work as a safety cable to help prevent gates falling. They are recommended to use in order to fulfil the requirements of the DIN EN 12604 regulation to keep your gates from falling over if the top hinge was to fail.

Unfortunately, every major storm leaves at least a few sites like this one where a gate is torn off its hinges, which often leads to severe damages and liabilities. So we went ahead and developed the Gate Restrainer, which will be there when it’s needed, but will remain (nearly) invisible otherwise.

The Gate Safe organisation recommends a gate tether as a great alternative to increase safety in the “single point of failure”, i.e., the hinges. This is following the mandatory rule (British Standard EN 12604:2017) that requires three hinges or the use of a gate safety device on all new swing gates.

There are a few benefits to using a gate tether instead of three hinges:

  1. Gate tethers are visually unobtrusive but increase safety.
  2. Some gate tethers can be retrofitted.
  3. Gate tethers won’t cause binding like using three hinges can.

How is the gate tether constructed?

When we first designed the gate restrainers we wanted them to be as simple and functional as possible. We like to compare it to an airbag: neatly tucked away, hoping that you will never need it, but there to save you from a disaster.

Gate tether with brass and rubber end stops at each end

That’s why we designed the gate restrainer from flexible braided stainless-steel wire. Maximum strength combined with added durability gives you a gate safety cable you can rely on.

The main benefit of the GRS Gate Restrainer is that it doesn’t interfere with your carefully powder coated gate posts.

It is installed by drilling just two 13mm holes – one in the gate and one in the gate post. Once the ends have been pushed through and the plastic bushes fitted, it stays hidden in your gate post and slides out when the gate moves, allowing for a 180° opening.

Our gate safety cables, GRS, are made from:

  • Braided stainless steel wire.
  • Heavy-duty stainless-steel stop ends.
  • Stainless steel top ends.
  • Plastic bushes to protect your gate from scratches.

The security

Given its slim appearance one might think that this restrainer is a ‘weakling’, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Thanks to the braided stainless-steel wire, the GRS is a mighty force.

We have developed two versions to allow for a wider range of applications:

The GRS-03 can handle gates of up to 260 kg with its 3mm thick wire.

The GRS-04 can go up to 500 kg thanks to its 4 mm thick wire and the reinforced plates.

But don’t just take our word for it. Both versions of the GRS have been through a rigorous testing cycle to ensure their safety and functionality when disaster strikes.

Next to that, every restrainer is tested before shipment in accord with our strict quality control standards.

Better safe than sorry!

There have been cases where gate installers received large fines after the gate they installed fell over (FOBS 108, May 2020). Naturally this is a situation you want to avoid.

But more importantly, installing a simple safety device like a gate safety cable can be the difference between a gate that just needs to be re-fitted and a terrible accident. With the GRS you are out of excuses.

  • It can be fitted to any metal swing gate in minutes.
  • It doesn’t deflect from the craftmanship of your gate.
  • Anyone with a drill can install it.
  • It doesn’t cost the world.

At Gatemaster, we make products that will help gate manufacturers and installers all over the world create great products that work well and keep their customers safe and happy.

Keyless combination lock for wooden gates

Keyless code lock on a wooden gate

Wondering what the benefits for a keyless combination lock for wooden gates are?

Keyless entry for wooden gates is increasingly popular for gate owners. Door locks with a combination code are frequently used internally in buildings, for convenience and also security. There are a number of advantages of this method of securing an outdoor point of entry, including:

  • Eliminates the need for a key, which is convenient especially in larger properties or organisations where there can be several entry points needing a key
  • Keys can present a security concern for any property when they are lost, potentially giving an outsider unhindered access
  • An effective option where multiple users need entry, as a code can be easily distributed rather than giving out keys
  • If security is breached the code can be changed, whereas a keyed lock would need to be replaced and new keys cut
  • A combination lock is often more secure than a keyed lock, as keyholes can be a point of weakness for the lock. Experienced lock-breakers can gain access by picking the lock, or by inserting something into the keyhole and forcing their way in
  • A keypad lock’s mechanism is mainly concealed inside, giving better security and also higher durability against moisture and rust

Keyless combination lock for wooden gates

Keypad locks that are designed specifically for gates are a lot less common.  While standard keypad door locks are often used on gates, they are far from ideal.  One of the main reasons for this is that the latch is designed for the often small gap between the door and frame, whereas gates often have far larger tolerances.  This is often due to gate hinges being more heavy duty but less precise than door hinges.

Wood changes its moisture content as a response to the humidity in the air, meaning it will shrink when drier and expand when more humid. Therefore, the locking mechanism needs to allow for these changes and be secure enough to compensate for potential shifting, warping, and swelling of your wooden gate.

The Gatemaster Solutions

Getting a suitable lock is therefore recommended and luckily we have a range to suit. A keyless combination lock for wooden gates could be the way to secure your garden gate!

We have expanded our range as well to offer more options for a secure wooden gate. As we aim to simplify gate hardware, you can install all of the below lock without picking up a chisel.

BDGW – Superlock Surface Fixed Digital Gate Lock

The BDGW is our newest addition to the Superlock family and is a fully mechanical lock. The entire lock mechanism and keypad is made in high quality stainless steel, making it highly corrosion resistant. The BDGW comes with a gate keep, which is installed on the gate post and will receive the latch bolt.

  • Corrosion resistant – the lock features marine grade keypads and powder-coated stainless steel casing
  • No power needed – the mechanical keypad requires no power and can be installed anywhere
  • Adjustable latch bolt – the latch springs in 5/8″ and can be adjusted for another 3/4″ in length
  • Auto-latching – close the gate and the latch bolt latches into the gate frame. To open the gate – enter the code and turn the handle
  • Available in 2 optionsDouble-sided (keypad on both sides) or Single sided (keypad outside, lever handle inside).

Please note: This keyless combination lock for wooden gates is handed. To find out if you need the left or right handed option, follow the simple steps in this guide.

DGLW – Select Pro Surface Fixed Gate Lock

The Gatemaster DGLW Surface fixed gate lock is a product that incorporates both the keyless entry and the tolerance needed for gates. It works as both a gate latch option and also a secure method of locking a gate. Mainly used on wooden gates, the DGLW was designed as an answer to the lack of options for keyless combination lock for wooden gates. It incorporates:

  • A latch that extends up to 1-1/8″ from the face of the gate – maximum tolerance and high security!
  • Long latching movement – latch bolt projects up to 3/4″ into the keep which increases security
  • Simple to fit – just drill 3 holes through the gate and bolt on
  • Keep box included
  • Durable – tested to over 1,000 hours salt spray, will survive the elements
  • Auto-latching – close the gate and the latch bolt latches into the keep box
  • Available in 2 options – Double sided (keypad both sides) or Single sided (Keypad outside, lever handle inside)

Watch our tutorial on how to install the DGLW keyless combination lock for wooden gates.

Please note: The DGLW is handed. To find out if you need the left or right handed option, follow the simple steps in this guide.

SLDS – Superlatch Digital Lock

As opposed to the BDGW and the DGLW, the Superlatch features a combination keypad on the outside of the gate, but has a latch lever handle on the inside. The latch is protected by an integrated shroud to help prevent outsiders gaining easy access.

  • No power needed – mechanical keypad lock
  • Corrosion resistant – marine grade keypad and powder-coated stainless steel latch
  • Built to accommodate the swelling of wooden gates during the wet season
  • Reversible handing – can be used on left or right hand gates
  • Auto-latching – close the gate and the latch catches onto the strike plate. To open the gate – from outside enter the code and turn the handle, from inside simply twist the latch.
  • Easy to install – install by drilling 3 holes in the gate. View the installation video here.
  • A great alternative to a standard digital lock with tubular latch

Simple, yet effective: Security collar for hook and eye hinge

metal gate in front of hedge

We love to share our knowledge and experience with our customers, but we also learn a great deal from all of them. So, this blog post was actually inspired by them. Following the recent thefts of farm gates around Bognor Regis, UK, our local partners pointed out that our SCP push-fit security collar offers a great solution to prevent that problem. As those collars have been flying under the radar, we have decided to spread the word.

If you are using ‘hook and eye’ hinges, you are certainly in the majority. This hinge has always been incredibly popular in the UK amongst gate professionals because it is simple, reliable and does the job.

Unfortunately, such a simple hinge does not offer a lot of security: with a loose fit, your gate can be taken off your post with no additional tools. Every year, a few articles such as this one (Police warning after spate of farm gate thefts – FW) are published in local press, warning farmers and properties for another series of thefts.

It goes without saying that damages to your property, cattle and even just repairs can add up to significant amounts out of your wallet!

Fitting to hook and eye hinges

The remedy for this problem is the push-fit security collar. It is simply pushed on to the hook of the hinge and it serves as a cap. The collar functions similarly to a zip-tie: when pushed down, it is impossible to move it up again.

Therefore, no fasteners, glues or similar is used and the collar can be installed on your hook and eye hinges in mere seconds.

As the collar comes in 15/32″, 5/8″, 3/4″ and 55/64″, it can be used for most – if not all – hook and eye hinges for both new and existing installations.

Case Study – Self-closing gates, Manor Place Depot, London

Timber clad metal gate with self-closing gas strut, lights and branch in foreground

CASE STUDY – BELLSURE, Gas Strut Closer

Manor Place Depot, London, UK

Self-closing gate solutions for external gates in residential areas can be a challenge, due to outdoor environment and potential vandalism. Bellsure chose the Gatemaster gas strut closer for their bike shelters in a prestigious development in the heart of London.

The Project

Our client Bellsure was asked to supply a cycle storage scheme in Manor Place Depot, a residential development part of a multi billion pound regeneration scheme in Elephant & Castle.

The bespoke shelters that Bellsure designed were solidly constructed from steel and clad in timber. The gates were therefore robust but also a reasonable weight.

Bellsure chose an electro-magnetic lock as the locking device for this project. The client was also looking to fit a self-closing gate device to ensure they always closed and secured themselves. In addition, they needed a solution that would close slowly to prevent the gates causing any disturbance.

The Self-closing Gatemaster Solution

In order to solve the clients concerns, we suggested a screw-fixed gas strut closer. This is a hydraulically dampened gas strut that ensures a gentle close and is very easy to fit to metal, wooden and some vinyl gates. This suited their specifications for the following reasons:

Easily retro-fitted: The gas strut closers were required to be fitted after installation.

Slow closing: The unique oil dampening within the gas strut ensures the gate closes safely and doesn’t bang shut.

Unobtrusive: The slimline strut blended in well with the cladded gates.

We regularly install the Gatemaster gas struts on our shelters and they have proven to be good quality and reliable. A lot of the shelters we install are steel framed clad with timber which makes the gates heavy, and the Gatemaster closer works well with no issues.

It was a good retrofit solution for our Manor Place Depot install, the gas struts fitted well with the doors and were easy to install with the screw on brackets. Overall a good install for us and the client was pleased with the end result.

The Innovative Bolt-on Hydraulic Gate Closer

hydraulic gate closer disassembled

Are you in search of an adjustable, adaptable gate closing solution for metal or wooden gates? Then our hydraulic gate closer might be just what you’re looking for!

Our hydraulic gate closer

The all-new APSW bolt-on hydraulic gate closer is a new and improved version of the well-known APS closer, one of the most reliable and sturdy gate closers on the market.

Unlike its predecessor, the APSW can now be bolted onto the gate. This ends the need for welding and fitting it will be an easy task for either the gate manufacturer or the gate installer.

Gate manufacturers:

The APSW self-closing hinge kit is the way to go for both metal and wooden gates. Above all, the gates can be prepared to take the brackets in the workshop and the closer installed on site, which removes the need for any welding.

Fencing & Gate install only:

The APSW gate closer is easy to fit on site as all you need to do is drill and tap the proper holes on metal gates or screw onto wooden gates. The manufacturer doesn’t have to prepare the gate beforehand unless they specifically choose to do so.

This hydraulic gate closer boasts the following features:

  • Robust closer unit – A long-lasting solution, which discourages vandalism
  • Heavy duty – designed for gates up to 330lb (150kg)
  • Meets ROSPA recommendations
  • 2 speed adjustable – latching and closing speed adjustable for easy configuring
  • No power needed and maintenance free
  • Stop hinge prevents the gate opening wider than 100° degrees

The kit includes a bottom closer unit and a top hinge set. In addition, the kit comes with metal gate fittings as well; the installer would need to supply fixings for wooden gates.

Retrofitting

We are often asked if this closer can be retrofitted after the gate is installed. Unfortunately, it cannot work with any existing hinge configuration as the pivot point has to be aligned top and bottom. However, the closer is suitable for retrofitting if the existing hinges can be removed.

Please note – this product is designed to be fitted by professional gate manufacturers or installers.
